The 3rd Symposium of the ZHM Graduate School for Materials Science took place from 29 to 30 November 2018. As in the previous year, there was again a colorful program for the participants with the aim of exchanging information and networking. The poster session and lab visits at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and at the Hamburg University of Technology provided an opportunity for this. New this year was the topic of the symposium: Machine Learning and Data Mining in Science. Therefore, Prof. Alexander Hartmaier (Ruhr-Universität Bochum) was invited. He showed the participants in a hands-on session how he uses machine learning methods to homogenize mechanical properties from micro- to macroscale. In a workshop offered by Prof. Norbert Huber (HZG) the participants learned the use of artificial neural networks. The event was rounded off on Friday afternoon with the alumni presentations and a subsequent plenary discussion. This year's report by a post-doctoral researcher on her academic career contrasted with the career starts in industry. In the end, the Best Poster Award was presented, which this year went to Frederic Bock, a doctoral candidate at HZG.
